Week 55 in London

Week 55: 18 – 24 April 2016

Roslyn spent most of her week in Frankfurt where she was working on the London stand at the IMEX Exhibition.  It is the landmark exhibition for professionals working within the incentive travel, meetings and events industry.

As well as coordinating a 10 x 13m stand and 23 stand partners for the 3 day exhibition, Roslyn also ran 2 networking evenings which were a great success!

Returning on Friday, Roslyn’s networking throughout the week had obviously paid off as she was given tickets to the Manchester United vs Everton Football (Soccer) semi-final at Wembley Stadium. These weren’t only just standard tickets, they were tickets to a corporate box!

We enjoyed the game + drinks + dinner on Saturday afternoon, continuing on for more drinks at the Hilton Roof Terrace afterwards.

And because we couldn’t get enough on Saturday, on Sunday we headed back out to Wembley. This time to go to the Designer Outlets and look for some new runners for both Roslyn and Brendan as the weather is getting warmer with summer is fast approaching!

Highlights for the week:
- Roslyn in Frankfurt
- Manchester United vs Everton football semi-final at Wembley Stadium
- Corporate box
- Drinks at Hilton roof terrace
- Wembley shopping
- Nicer summer weather

Week 54 in London

Week 54: 11 - 17 April 2016

With just two days left of their holiday, Nola and Stacey enjoyed their last few days in London wandering around Clapham, visiting Platform 9 and ¾ at Kings Cross, taking an iconic picture at the Abbey Road crossing, last minute shopping and packing.

3 weeks went past quite quickly and before we knew it, it was Thursday, 14th April and it was time for them to go home. Given their flight was quite early we decided to stay out at the Hilton Hotel at Heathrow Airport and enjoyed a nice dinner together before saying goodbye the next morning.

Brendan and Roslyn must have got delirious after they left and spent the night learning the wonders of Face-Swap. Brendan even managed to face swap with a tortilla wrap!

On Sunday morning, Roslyn was off to Frankfurt for the IMEX Exhibition with work, similar to the trip in Barcelona a few months back. With Brendan left to his own devices over the next 5 days, he took the opportunity to be a tourist and spent Sunday at the Tower of London. Established by William Conqueror in 1066 to keep hostile Londoners at bay, the mighty Tower of London has been the scene of Britain’s most dramatic, fascinating and surprising history.  It is quite a large ‘museum’ so Brendan spent all day wandering the exhibits and soaking up the history.

Highlights for the week:
- Harry Potter Platform 9 and 3/4 at Kings Cross (Nola and Stacey)
- Abbey Road crossing (Nola and Stacey)
- Hilton Hotel
- Nola and Stacey flew out
- Snapchat face swap with a tortilla
- Roslyn left for Frankfurt for IMEX Exhibition
- Brendan visited the Tower of London

Ireland

Thursday 7th April 2016:

We arrived at Dublin Airport and were lucky enough to be picked up by the Celtic Campervans shuttle and transferred out to the depot to collect our van. After being given the full rundown on how to operate everything and empty the waste water, Brendan was entrusted with the keys, Roslyn with directions, and we hit the road bound for Blarney.

Actually making it out onto the motorway was more difficult than it should have been. We spent the first 15-20 minutes driving around in circles. We were on the motorway, then took an off ramp that somehow turned us back around to where we came from. Having taken the long way round, we eventually ended up where we were supposed to be.

A little under three hours later we arrived at our accommodation, a patch of gravel at Blarney Caravan and Camping Park. Brendan found the Fiat bed-on-wheels smooth and easy to drive like a normal car, but this almost created a false sense of security because the thing was indeed significantly longer, wider and higher than a car. Our single minor wipeout occurred on the drive into the village of Blarney to stock up on the necessities, smacking the passenger side mirror into a light post. Fortunately, the mirror was already pretty scratched and nothing broke so we ended up getting away with that one. As this was our first night, we weren't quite sure just how warm we'd be and during the night certainly regretted having not bumped up the heater

The following day, Friday, we explored the Blarney Castle and Gardens. The current castle is the third incarnation of a castle on the site, and dates back to 1446. Over the last few hundred years, millions of pilgrims have climbed the narrow stairs of the castle to gain the gift of eloquence by kissing the Blarney Stone. The stone is set at the bottom of the wall below the battlements, and to plant a peck on the rock one has to lay down on the edge of the walkway and hold onto iron bars, while dangling headfirst towards the ground. All four of us made it to the top and nervously hung from the edge to kiss the stone.

As to whether we've actually become more eloquent, we will leave that for you, the readers of our blog, to be the judges. Next we went across to have a delicious pub lunch, then back in the van and onwards to the famous seaside Cliffs of Moher. Along the way we passed by some remarkable scenery, including an amazing seaside, cliff top golf course. At the Cliffs, the extreme wind so powerful that it made it hard to open the doors of the van, and once we did the icy temperature made us thankful for having brought our heavy jackets.

The Cliffs of Moher are Ireland's most visited natural attraction, and stretch for 8 kilometres along the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Ireland. At their highest point, they are 214 metres tall. From April through to late July, the Puffin (the icon of Iceland) nests at the cliffs although we didn't manage to see any.

Back onto the narrow winding coast roads, we headed around 15 minutes north to Nagle's Doolin Camping and Caravan Park. The manager at this park was fairly useless and not very welcoming. On pulling up at the check in office, there was nobody there and a handwritten sign on the window to say call this number. All well and good except that there was absolutely no phone signal here. The manager suddenly appeared out of nowhere, and when Brendan said he tried to call but had no signal was told "yeah, that happens". He was also less than impressed that he'd waited for us "all day".

Located alongside the sea adjacent to the Doolin Pier, and with ocean vistas in one direction and rolling green hills in the other, this felt a little more secluded.  Lucky we'd stocked up earlier at the supermarket in, what we thought was a small village, Blarney because there really was nothing out here. The storm that we experienced during the night was fierce and loud; the camper swayed in the wind and the heavy rain/hail awoke Brendan. In his half asleep state of mind, he had to look outside the window to check that we hadn't been washed into the sea and it wasn't waves crashing against the van.

We packed up and departed the park on Saturday morning, and on our journey discovered that not far from Doolin it had actually snowed during the night.

We stopped in at Galway for lunch, a university town, where the sun was shining and the temperature was quite pleasant. In the pub we entered an elderly man had dozed off while eating his burger, using the bun as a pillow of sorts.

Back into the van and we cruised on to Dublin, pulling in at the Camac Valley Tourist Caravan and Camping Park around two hours later. The following morning, Sunday, we left the van behind, and boarded a bus into the city. We set off in search of the Moore Street Market where Agnes Brown has her stall on Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie, but sadly there were no stalls set up today. With poor weather looming we wandered off to one of Dublin's major attractions, the Guinness Storehouse.

From 1904 right through until 1988, the Storehouse was the fermentation plant and is designed in the shape of a giant pint glass that if full, would hold 14.3 million pints. We learnt about the brewing process, the correct way to "taste" Guinness, viewed historic advertising material, before finally learning how to pour the perfect Guinness and graduating from The Guinness Academy. The glass encased circular seventh floor houses the Gravity Bar, presenting fantastic views across Dublin, although you really have to fight for a seat near the window.

Our Irish road trip came to an end on Monday, packing up and returning the van then heading back in the shuttle to the airport. At the airport, we swapped to a taxi into the city and found a local pub for lunch before it was all over and time to head home.

- Kissed the Blarney Stone
- Seaside, cliff top golf course.
- Cliffs of Moher
- Doolin Pier
- Fierce storm

Week 53 in London

Week 53: 4 - 10 April 2016

The #NolaStaceEuroTrip continued for the next 3 days as the duo saw more sights such as the Changing of the Guards, a shopping spree to Harrods, and lunch at Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium. Like a mischievous child, Nola was asked by a staff member to stop patting a sleeping cat because apparently "the cats don't like that". They also visited the Tower of London and went for a Thames River Cruise.

Brendan and Roslyn were glad to only have a 3 day week at work, as we were heading off to Ireland for an extended long weekend.

But in just 3 days, there was still plenty of excitement. Brendan spotted Alex Mytton from Made in Chelsea and girlfriend walking out of their apartment, and Roslyn had not one, but two work functions to attend at some of London’s top hotels, the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and The Stafford. You may recognise the grand staircase of the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel from the film clip of Spice Girls music video, Wannabe.

Highlights for the week:
- Short working week for our trip to Ireland
- Harrods (Nola and Stacey)
- Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium (Nola and Stacey)
- Tower of London (Nola and Stacey)
- Thames River Cruise (Nola and Stacey)

Week 52 in London and Wells-Next-The-Sea

Week 52: 28 March - 3 April 2016

After our trip to Paris, we headed back to work on Tuesday leaving Nola and Stacey to play tourist on their own.

They started their sightseeing adventures with a Sandemans Walking Tour, walking in the footsteps of the rich and powerful on the Royal London Tour. Covering some good ground, they passed lots of key attractions such as Buckingham Palace, The Houses of Parliament, Westmister Abbey, Trafalgar Sqaure and the Big Ben. They even learnt that the Big Ben is the name of the bell, rather than the tower itself, which is called the Elizabeth Tower.

Keen to learn more, on Wednesday they headed out on a day trip to Bath and Stonehenge. Nola and Stacey were in awe of the beautiful buildings that make up the quaint town, just as we were on our visits back in September and again in late November. Nola and Stacey spent the day wandering around the town and having lunch, before getting back on the coach to drive to Stonehenge. After a quick visit at this mysterious attraction, it was time to head back to London.

Thursday and Friday, Nola and Stacey continued to be avid sight-seers and ticked off some other key London attractions such as the London Eye, London Dungeons, Hyde Park and Oxford Street.

Come the weekend, we hired a bright red Honda Jazz through easyCar Club and headed out to Wells-Next-The-Sea. What and where is Wells-Next-The-Sea you ask? Wells, as the locals call it, is the original hometown of Brendan’s family ancestry on the Norman side. It is an old fishing village about three hours’ drive north east of London, in the district of Norfolk. We spent the morning searching for the gravestones of Thomas and Ann Norman, Brendan’s mother’s father’s, great great grandparents, who are believed to have died and been buried there in the early to mid 1800s. Unfortunately the town’s main church, St Nicholas, burnt down in 1879 before being reconstructed and given the time since passed, many of the gravestones that were left were in a poor and indecipherable state. After having no luck, we continued looking around the town and drove across to Holkham Beach before having some delicious fish and chips back in town for lunch. How very British of us!

After lunch and a gelato for good measure, we continued the ancestry search out to another town just outside of Wells, named Holkham. The original Norman relative to emigrate to Australia was Robert Norman (Brendan’s great great great grandfather) and it is believed that Robert's brother, William, lived here and was buried at St Withburga Church. The church sits on a hilltop in a remote, wooded corner of the Holkham Hall estate which was a little bit eerie to find, but there is no mistaking the church. It is very grand and magnificent! We managed to find the grave of William Norman and during our hunt also discovered that this church was also home to the Earls of Leicester. Perhaps the Norman family weren't working class after all!

Pleased by our efforts at finding a Norman gravestone, we headed back to London to return the car. When we arrived at the apartment building to drop off the car, we were greeted by an older man called Ted, one of the residents. The apartment building was for retirees and we had hired the car of the manager (not Ted). It was starting to rain as we dropped off the car, so Ted very kindly offered to drop us home so we didn’t have to walk in the rain – what a gentleman!

On Sunday it was time for some more shopping, so we headed out to the London Designer Outlet at Wembley in search for some trainers. With new shoes for Nola and Stacey in toe, we then headed to the Grosvenor Hotel for a scrumptious afternoon tea.
