Week 30 in London

Week 30: 26 October – 1 November 2015

The further into winter we go, and the colder and darker the evenings grow. The original 6 month lease on our flat had now expired, and so we entered into the second 6 month stint that had been offered to us by the landlord. At least now we had some certainty about where we would be celebrating Christmas.

Roslyn had a second lavish dinner at Goldsmiths Hall, a livery hall, as part of the American NFL International Series games, with attendees including one particular team owner, whose ancestry also links her to both a major car manufacturer and large tyre company. The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths is one of the livery companies of the City of London, comprising London's ancient and modern trade associations and guilds. The Goldsmiths company dates back to 1327, and the current hall to 1835.

Halloween is surprisingly big thing over here, we thought only the Americans got into it but the Brits also go right out in terms of preparation and decorations. Roslyn’s work was kitted out with pumpkins and cob webs, and even had a dress up day on Friday.

After work on Friday, Roslyn had drinks with her former Royal College of Psychiatrists colleagues.

On Friday evening, we set off for our budget weekend in Copenhagen, Denmark. A few months prior Roslyn had secured return flights for the grand total of £20 per person, with low-cost airline Ryanair as part of a 30th anniversary sale. Although Ryanair is one of Europe’s largest carriers, the trade-off for the discounted fare is that they don’t fly out of either of the 2 major airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.

We caught a bus for the hour long journey north of London to Luton, the base for Luton Airport and Vauxhaull (General Motors) automotive production plant. Considering how far away from our home Luton is, we'd elected to spend the night at a hotel near the airport. Touted as being minimalist, easyHotel (part of the easyGroup that includes easyJet) takes this to another level. The ensuite rooms are definitely sparse, comprising only the bed and a TV (we think you had to pay extra to use it though). Annoyingly, the water in the toilet in our room ran all night long yet it didn't flush, and the room stunk of stale smoke. No window, no bedside table, no bible. But at least the room was clean, and cheap.
